Automated Cell Counter
Includes WBCs, RBCs, hemoglobin, hematocrit, indices, platelets, and automated 5-part differential. Manual differential performed if indicated.

Specimen Requirements

Blood and smears are required.

Specimen Type:  Whole blood and smears

Collection Container/Tube:  Lavender top (K2 EDTA) Specimen

Volume:  Tube must be at least half full

Specimen Minimum Volume:  2 mL

 

Smears:  Submit 2 well-made, unstained blood smears.

Label slides with patient's name (first, last) and birthdate.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated:  Within 48 hours of collection.

Ambient:  Within 24 hours of collection.

Slides made within 4 hours of collection.

See report.

Normal values are gender and age specific.

Critical values (automatic call-back):

WBC:  <2 or >34 K/UL  (Newborn:  <5.1 or >39.0)

HEMOGLOBIN:  <7.0 or >25.0 g/dL (Newborn:  <9.0 or >26.0)

BLASTS: presence of any blasts

PLATELET COUNT: ≤50 K/µL or ≥ 1,000 K/µL
